Natural stone asks for a gentle routine. A soft damp cloth is usually the right starting point. Acidic, abrasive and harsh chemical cleaners should be avoided, as should the dishwasher, prolonged contact with liquids, extreme heat and sudden changes in temperature.
Natural porosity and mineral composition mean a surface may change with time. Care is not an attempt to stop material life entirely. It is a way to let that life develop with attention.
Everyday cleaning
Remove dust and light marks with a clean, soft cloth. When moisture is needed, use a lightly damp cloth rather than saturating the stone. Dry the surface after cleaning so water does not remain in contact with the material longer than necessary.
Do not use acidic cleaners, abrasive powders, scouring pads or harsh chemical products. These can dull a polished surface, mark an edge or react with the minerals in the stone. Products described as general kitchen or bathroom cleaners are not automatically suitable for natural stone.
Water, heat and sudden change
Avoid prolonged contact with liquids. Wipe spills promptly and do not allow water to sit in recesses or on the underside of an object. Natural porosity can make some stones more sensitive to staining than others.
Do not place natural stone products in a dishwasher. The combination of heat, detergent, prolonged water exposure and movement can damage the surface or the object.
Protect stone from extreme heat and sudden temperature changes. A rapid shift from cold to hot, or from hot to cold, can place stress on a natural material. Use the object only in the manner described for that specific product.
Product-specific guidance
Form and function matter. An incense holder, tray, bath object and decorative piece may require different handling. Follow the care information on the relevant product page when it provides additional instructions.
